On June 14, the weather in London was good, but my heart was uneasy. This was my first time at the former Royal Mint site, where I joined thousands of friends from Hong Kong, Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan, and even local British communities, to loudly oppose China’s plan to build the so-called “super embassy”. I stand here, I feel a heavier sense of responsibility and a clearer understanding of what we are fighting for.

現場人頭攢動,大家舉起「Bow to China Lose Forever」的海報,高喊「光復香港、時代革命」、「Say No to CCP」的口號。

The site was bustling with people. Everyone unfurled a poster reading “Bow to China Lose Forever” and chanted slogans like “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Time” and “Say No to CCP”. Watching these familiar faces – those Hong Kongers who have made immense sacrifices for freedom, and representatives from other communities equally oppressed by the Chinese Communist Party – my emotions ran high. We all understand that this “super embassy” is certainly not a simple diplomatic institution. It is more like a symbol of “planting a flag on British soil”, a potential “diplomatic accusation center” that could be used for “transnational repression” and “surveillance” of overseas dissidents.

Yesterday, the British pianist Dr. K also came. He stated that in the UK, one should enjoy freedom of speech, and the CCP’s acts of “cross-border repression” are completely unacceptable. He was absolutely right; examples like his, where he was harassed for simply playing music in public, are not uncommon in the UK. Furthermore, friends wanted by the Hong Kong police with bounties on their heads were brave enough to come and speak out without fear of suppression. Carmen Lau even mentioned that her former British neighbor received letters from Hong Kong urging them to report exiled Hong Kongers. This invisible hand of extended terror is appalling. These stories make one deeply feel that the CCP’s infiltration and threats are ubiquitous.

A local British resident living near the Mint spoke. She stated that seeing Hong Konger wear masks to cover their faces made her truly begin to understand our fear and the true terror of the CCP. She worried that if the super embassy is built, nearby residents will face increased CCTV surveillance and might even be forced to relocate. Her speech deeply moved me, demonstrating that our voices are indeed being heard.

The British government has now postponed its decision on whether to approve this super embassy until September 9. We call on the British government to include both mainland China and Hong Kong in the “advanced tier” of the “Foreign Influence Registration Scheme” (FIRS) to better counter these subtle political influences.

As long as the British government does not explicitly reject this plan, we will persist. We hope to solve this problem in our generation and not pass it on to the next, to ensure that what is right is passed down. In the UK, a relatively free land, we have a responsibility to continue speaking out for those who cannot voice their opinions and for all who are oppressed by the CCP.

This “battle” is not yet over. The former Royal Mint may indeed become an “eternal battleground” in the foreseeable future. But as long as we stand united and persevere, freedom will ultimately triumph over autocracy.
